Details on the route of the psychogeographical tour on 19 October 2024, starting at 10 a.m. in Venice, as part of the 84/24 Anarchist Venice review.
1) Campo San Polo
Campo san Polo was the symbol of the 1984 Anarchist Gathering: there, a circus tent was erected to host exhibitions (“Art and Anarchy” and “History and Geography of Anarchism”), film festivals and debates.
2) Rio terà dei Nomboli
Site of the historical International Anarchist Bookshop, active in the 1960s.
3) Campo Santa Margarita
The beating heart of "Venezia '84”, dedicated to uninterrupted conviviality, art performances (theatre, poetry, music...), and an extensive exhibition of international anarchist publishing; a food and wine stand was placed in the middle, always open. But Campo Santa Margarita has a much longer radical history, starting from the Camera del Lavoro of 1910-21; nowadays, the ‘Marco Polo’ bookshop is one of the most active independent bookshops on the current Italian publishing scene.
4) Ca’ Foscari
Opposite the University, the ‘Amor del libro’ gallery, animated by the historic anarchists Silvano and Lili.
5) Osteria “da Codroma”, in itinere
Traditional meeting place of socialists and anarchists, in times when the spirit of rebellion was cultivated in meeting places and through the relationships of everyday life. Not far away, there’s the calle where ‘Utopia 2’ bookshop was once located - a crucial information and coordination centre during "Venezia '84".
6) Campo dei Tolentini
Headquarters of the IUAV, which hosted in its Aula Magna the international conference on authoritarian tendencies and libertarian tensions in contemporary societies, and which now hosts the 84/24 Venezia Anarchica exhibition; we’ll walk past the Awai cultural association, a radical garrison in Venice today.
7) Strada nova
We’ll pass in front of some of the places that have marked the anarchist presence in Venice over the decades: Palazzo Seriman, where the international conference on Bakunin was held in 1976; Sala San Leonardo, where the conference "Tu sei maledetta, uomini e donne contro la guerra" ("You are cursed. Men and women against war") was held in 2014. In Campo san Leonardo, ‘Gigetto Bonometto’ held an historic book stall, and sold also anarchist books.
8) Campo de l’Anconeta
Convivial break at the Arzanà Association, with a guided tour in the private museum collection of this former squero, with a special focus on craftsmen's work and migrations in the 18th and 19th century.
9) Rio terà Maddalena
End of the psychogeographical tour at the tables of the Osteria ‘Vecia Carbonera’.
